A photo has been uncovered in the Australian War Memorial showing Pte Charles Norman Kenny and 10 of his mates from the 19th Battalion. The photo was taken soon after they arrived in France in September 1916. Charles is the tallest and is 3rd from the left in the back row.
They called themselves “The Syndicate” and their motto was “Get an eye full of it”.
Charles died of wounds sustained at Bullecourt on 3 May 1917. He was 26 years old, a clerk, unmarried, of Ryde. His biographical section is here.
Of the eleven men in the photo, only five made it back home to Australia.
