Thanks to the family members who attended the Anzac Day Dawn Service, we now have a photo of Pte David Michael O’Brien. It has been loaded to his biographical section.
David O’Brien enlisted in May 1916. He was 23 years old, single, and was a fireman and labourer at the Gasworks. As an Irishman it is somewhat puzzling to the family that he enlisted just after the Easter Uprising in Dublin. He was training in the UK when his mother died and he obtained leave to attend her funeral in Ireland.
He joined the 1st Battalion a day before they were engaged in the Second Battle of Bullecourt and was killed 2 days later on 5 May 1917.
